Daintree Village

Daintree, or Daintree Village, is a small settlement
of less than a hundred people on the banks of the Daintree River in
North Queensland, about 110km. north of Cairns.
The town was settled by timber cutters who came here looking for the
big red cedar trees in the 1880s, they cut down huge numbers of trees
and floated them down the river lashed together as rafts to take them
to the sawmills.
When the timber started running out and other industries such as dairy
and beef became the local livelyhood, all the produce was transported
by boat until 1933 when the road finally reached the village.
The village is named after Richard Daintree, who has spent several years
in the 1800's in Queensland as the Government geologist.
Nowadays the town lives on tourism and there are numerous tour operators
that take you out on the Daintree river to spot the big saltwater crocodiles,
as well as other birdlife.
Many serious birdwatchers come here specifically to spot birds on the
specialized birdwatching tours.
There are also some other tours such as 8x8 tours and nature walks.

Lovers of Big Things will surely want
to take a photo of the Big Barramundi
Although the town nowadays is not in the rainforest as
the timber cutters removed all the trees a long time ago Daintree Village
is still a very scenic place, and you can find rainforest nearby or
go for a drive through the scenic valley beyond the village
The town has three cafes, a timber museum, a souvenir shop and galleries
showcasing local arts and crafts, parks, picnic tables and public toilets.
Local shops sell tickets for the various river cruises and land-based
tours.
For accommodation, in the village and the nearby Daintree
valley, there are several bed and breakfasts and farmstays each offering
a unique location and experience which is mostly different from those
found in the rainforest. Other accommodation options range from the
local caravan park to a world renowned resort and spa.
While there consider a self-guided walk, to a beautiful
waterfall and swimming hole at Cassowary Falls on the Upper Daintree
Road, or an 8WD off-road rainforest and mountain tour.
